Assessment and Suitability

Ensuring care is appropriate, measured, and individual

Understanding whether non-surgical spinal decompression is right for you

Non-surgical spinal decompression can be an effective approach for some people, but it is not suitable for everyone.

At the Devon Disc Centre, assessment always comes before treatment.  Our priority is to understand what is contributing to your symptoms and whether decompression is appropriate for your current presentation.

A thorough suitability assessment allows us to:

  • Identify the source of your symptoms

  • Determine whether spinal compression is a contributing factor

  • Assess neurological involvement

  • Identify red flags or contraindications

  • Decide whether decompression is an appropriate care option

This ensures care is measured, individual, and appropriate.

Your Suitability Assessment

Your assessment is structured, unhurried, and individual. It may include:

Clinical History

We take time to understand when symptoms began, how they have changed, and what influences them.

Physical and Neurological Examination

We assess spinal movement, strength, reflexes, and signs of nerve involvement.

Functional Assessment

Where appropriate, we assess posture, coordination, and movement patterns.

Imaging Review (If Available)

If you have MRI or CT scans, these are reviewed alongside your clinical findings.

This process allows us to build a clear picture of how your spine and nervous system are functioning.

Determining Suitability

Following your assessment, we determine whether non-surgical spinal decompression is appropriate.

Decompression may be considered when:

  • Compression is contributing to symptoms

  • Neurological findings are stable

  • Conservative care is appropriate

Decompression may not be appropriate when:

  • Red flag neurological signs are present

  • Significant instability is suspected

  • Another pathway is more appropriate

If decompression is not suitable, we will clearly explain the options for your next steps.

Biofeedback Monitored Care

When decompression is appropriate, care is delivered using biofeedback monitored technology.

This allows us to:

  • Monitor muscular responses

  • Adjust force in real time

  • Maintain comfort and safety

  • Individualise care

  • This additional layer of monitoring is particularly valuable for sensitive or complex presentations.

Taking the next step

If you are unsure whether your pain is disc related, or whether non-surgical spinal decompression may be suitable, an assessment is the best place to begin.

You do not need to decide everything immediately.  You simply need to understand what is influencing your symptoms.

Book an assessment with the Devon Disc Centre to explore your options.
